The race to who wins the New Patriotic flagbearer race is heating up. Ten candidates picked and submitted forms to lead the party in the next general elections in 2024. With President Akufo- Addo exiting his term of office next year, the NPP seek to get a formidable candidate to lead them and help them break the 8. All ten who picked up forms and went for the vetting have been cleared to contest. This scenario means that the party will in August organize a special congress to prune down the number of presidential aspirants to 5.
The party expects that 5 people will enter into the next stage of the flagbearer race in November.
One characteristic that has been observed by many in the ongoing race among the candidates is the incessant attacks on the credibility of one another. The Alan Kyerematen and Mahamudu Bawumia camps are the worst offenders with communicators of both camps hitting hard at each other. The Bawumia camp have questioned the loyalty of Alan Kyerematen when the party needed someone to represent them in the 2012 election petition.
The Alan Kyerematen faction have also noted that Bawumia is a nobody in the party and hasn' t done enough to be leading the party in a general election. While speaking on Metro TV' s Good Morning Ghana, Dr. Kabiru Tiah Mahama has called on the different factions to calm down and do clean campaigning. Tiah Mahama is the Technical Advisor to the Office of the Vice President.
Tiah Mahama insisted that the NPP will most likely lose the 2024 election if they continue on the campaign of insults. He explained that there will be one victor in November and that winner will need the support of the other losing candidates and so there was no need to insult each other. Dr. Mahama was worried that the attacks on personalities will cause massive cracks in the party and make the NDC snatch victory from the NPP in 2024.
