The race to who leads the ruling New Patriotic Party is heating up. So far 10 candidates have been cleared to contest in the NPP flagbearer race. Interestingly, the party has decided that only 5 candidates can enter into the final stage of the race. Out of the 10 candidates, many tip one of the trio of Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Alan Kyerematen, former Trade and Industry minister and Mahamudu Bawumia, current Vice President, to emerge and lead the NPP into the general elections of 2024.
Many had questioned how the format of the special congress will be. The special congress will be the party' s way of pruning down the number of candidates to 5. Interestingly, aside 9 other candidates, it was only Bawumia who wanted the mini congress to be done based on the regional level. The other 9 wanted the elections to be held in one place.
Many have alluded that the other 9 candidates of Francis Addai Nimoh, Joe Ghartey, Alan Kyerematen, Kojo Nsafoah, Akoto Afriyie, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko and Konadu Apraku all wanted the elections held at one venue for fear that if it is held at the regional level, Bawumia might end up winning in majority, if not all the 16 regions. This dominance will even make the delegates give him another landside in the final election in November.
In what many believe is a victory for Bawumia, the executive council of the party has indicated that the elections will be held on the regional level.
" We are doing it at the regional level. Same as it happened in 2014" , Justin Frimpong Kodua said. This decision didn' t please some of the aspiring flagbearers as Kwabena Agyapong noted that he has nothing to say because the party has made their decision. Many feel that Bawumia is being pampered by the executives of the party so he emerges as flagbearer. The mini congress is scheduled for August.
