Ghana' s Parliament last week witnessed a number of happenings. With the numbers in Parliament equal, both the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Party have been trying to outwit each other. The NPP have the MP for Fomena to thank for throwing in his support to them when needed, while the NDC cab sometimes also thank Bagbin for a number of decisions that could have gone against them.
Last week, an alleged leaked audio became the center of discussion of many news portals. The audio centered on the removal of the Inspector General of Police because his continuous stay in power could cause the ruling NPP to lose the 2024 elections. Though some of the discussants are yet to be identified, it is obvious that all those heard in the audio belong to the NPP.
The Minority in Parliament made an appeal to Bagbin calling for a probe of the leaked audio. The speaker agreed and created a 7- man committee to investigate the tape. Well, lawyer Maurice Ampaw isn' t enthused about this decision of Bagbin to create a probe committee. According to Mr Ampaw he is disappointed that Bagbin could easily be swayed to take a decision like this when Parliament has a number of important subjects to discuss.
According to lawyer Ampaw, the tape could have emanated from anywhere and there is no point in getting it investigated. He noted that the decision by Bagbin to call for an investigation is one of the disappointing decisions of the speaker. Lawyer Ampaw also lashed out at the Minority for engaging in trivial issues. He questioned why someone people' s gossip will suddenly turn into a major issue that the NDC will call to be probed.
Maurice firmly stated that the President doesn' t need to react or speak to the video as many are calling for. He advised Bagbin to call off the enquiry and allow the issue to slide.
