Ernest Owusu-Bempah (Right and John Mahama
Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah, Deputy Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party, stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and their flagbearer John Dramani Mahama were being hypocritical in relation to their criticisms of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Abena Dapaah. The NDC and Mahama are the ones responsible for leading the NDC.
Mr. Owusu-Bempah challenged Former President Mahama to take an oath before the well-known river god deity known as "antoa" on whether or not he has ever held more than one million dollars in his home.
In an interview given on July 24 to 3news.com, he noted that even if the NPP does not condone Madam Cecilia Dapaah's move of storing such a large amount of money at home, the NDC should quit being hypocritical about this topic.
"We oppose that action that the woman took, and we are not backing the action that the woman took, which is why the OSP that was constituted by NPP is examining the situation. At least the woman has character, as evidenced by her decision to resign from her position in the administration.
In her writing, Harruna Attah writes: Bravo! How JM deceived them with the use of language
The NDC, on the other hand, needs to quit being hypocritical. The BNI and National should begin coming to the residences of NDC bigwigs and John Mahama to investigate whether or not they, too, are allegedly hoarding large sums of money in their homes. The residence of Mahama ought to be searched by the OSP using a warrant, which ought to be issued.
"John Mahama had to come and take an oath by antoa if he hasn't kept one million dollars in the past.
Permit me to restate: we are not attempting to imply that we do not find what the woman has done to be wrong; yet, she is not the first individual to act in this manner. The NDC has no ethical grounds to criticise the NPP in this regard.
"We are challenging Mahama; if he is a man, he should swear on antoa that he has never before kept more than in his home. We are daring him to do so." If he is unable to make a swear word, then he and his NDC supporters should be quiet. Where did he receive the money to give to the delegates in order to help him win the election? If one million dollars is only pocket change to Mahama, then he really ought to let us off the hook.
His remarks come after former President John Dramani Mahama lashed out angrily at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing him of not being a role model for his appointees and failing to set a positive example after it was reported that one of them had kept millions of dollars and thousands of euros in hard money at home.
It was rumoured that Madam Dapaah had stashed away millions of Ghana cedis in addition to one million dollars and three hundred thousand euros in her residence.
Two housemaids are currently on trial in an Accra circuit court for the theft of the aforementioned funds, which they are said to have taken.
On Friday, July 21, Mr. Mahama took to his official Twitter page to voice his disapproval at such a move by a Minister of state when it was brought to his attention that this had occurred.
He used the word "scandalous" to characterise it.
In a tweet, he posed the question, "Even if genuinely acquired, why keep millions of hard currency at home?" he queried why someone would do such a thing.
In the meantime, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has conducted a search warrant at the residence of Cecilia Dapaah as part of the inquiry into her action.
After having her arrested the previous day, on July 24, by the Oregon State Police, this transpired.
According to the statement, members of the Oregon State Police are questioning her right now.
"At 11:55 GMT on the 24th of July 2023, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who had resigned from the position of Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources on the 22nd of July 2023, was placed under arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in respect of suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding large amounts of money and valuable items that reportedly were stolen from her residence. "At this time, authorised officers of the OSP are conducting an interview with Ms. Dapaah," the OSP stated in their statement.
