Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, the cousin of President Akufo-Addo, has delivered an oblique response to Boakye Agyarko, a candidate for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party.
Gabby referred to Boakye Agyarko as a "Energised Liar" after the latter made a number of false accusations against him during the re-negotiation of the 250 Megawatts Ameri Power Plant when he served as the Minister for Energy. These charges were made during Gabby's time in office as the Minister for Energy.
"What can one possibly say to an energised liar who is suffering from constipation?"
In an interview that went viral on the Kumasi-based radio station Asanteman FM, Boakye Agyarko made the allegation that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko unilaterally re-negotiated the Ameri deal without the consent of the committee that had been established by the government to work on the deal.
He went on to say that when he approached Gabby about the issue, Gabby told him to keep quiet since President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was already aware of the actions that Gabby had done. He added that when he confronted Gabby about the issue, Gabby told him to keep quiet.
According to Agyarko, Gabby called him while he was in the middle of a flight to the United States.
"I told him that I was travelling on board a plane," she said. After that, he (Gabby) informed me that he was going to give me a document by email, and that it was my responsibility to verify it. After arriving without incident and checking into my room at the hotel, I immediately opened my email client and viewed the paper. "Gabby had, on the blind side of the Committee set up and approved by the President to renegotiate with Ameri Energy Group, contracted a law firm to engage Ameri Energy Group and completed their negotiation and recommended a certain company to operate the Ameri Power Plant and extended the contract to 20 years" He said. This came as a surprise to me. The Committee had been set up and approved by the President to renegotiate with Ameri Energy Group.
I sent Gabby a letter asking him what power he had to act in that manner, and I attached the letter to the letter. And I informed him that Cabinet has given explicit orders to follow, and his reaction was what makes me think that my boss, President Akufo-Addo, doesn't know about what he has done... And I told him that Cabinet has provided precise instructions to follow.So I refrained from speaking," he continued.
According to the former minister of energy, when he brought up the issue with President Akufo-Addo, the president questioned him about whether or not there was something improper with what Gabby had done.
According to Boakye Agyarko, he reminded the president that "the authority to renegotiate the terms of the Ameri Power Plant doesn't lie in the hands of Gabby and that the proposal the firm he contracted made had violated all of the Cabinet instructions and extended the contract to 20 years." Boakye Agyarko added that he told the president this.
