Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi East Constituency Edward Ennin has criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what he believes to be a lack of action over the leaked galamsey report written by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng. Ennin was the MP for the Obuasi East Constituency during Akufo-Addo's first term in office.
The research uncovered the participation of several officials from the New Patriotic Party in illicit mining activities, which undermined the government's effort to combat galamsey.
Mr. Ennin voiced his amazement at the actions of the president in an interview with Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom on Burning Issues. He asked Mr. Yiadom, "do you think the report produced by Professor Frimpong-Boateng is not true? It is correct. We are aware of heads of metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executive offices, ministers, and party executives who are participating in galamsey; nevertheless, after the report, these individuals are still at post and are being covered rather than facing prosecution.
Mr. Ennin expressed concern that the president's lack of action on the report could encourage others to continue engaging in unlawful mining and destroying water bodies. He said this would be a result of the president's failure to act on the report.

He cast doubt on the government's dedication to the fight against corruption by making the following statement: "We are in this country, people's names have been mentioned for doing galamsey, you are a leader, you have made laws against such activities, and you are rather protecting appointees whose names have been mentioned breaking your laws." What are your options in the event that others follow suit?
The former lawmaker accused the president of protecting individuals in his government who have been suspected of corruption or involved in matters related to corruption rather than prosecuting them. This accusation was made in reference to the president's failure to bring criminal charges against those individuals. He voiced his dissatisfaction with the way the administration was treating the issue of corruption.
The frequency with which we hear allegations of corruption within this administration is cause for concern. When we ran for office in 2016, one of our campaign messages was "look what we are hearing now," but suddenly the opposite is true. Because of this, it is extremely difficult to even discuss corruption. Ghanaians have been let down by us."
Mr. Ennin expressed some degree of scepticism when asked about the prospects for his party in the approaching election. He stated that the party has not done enough to persuade him that they are capable of breaking the eight-year cycle in which they have been in power.
