Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana's Vice President, recently disclosed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had promised him that he "will go far" in his career.

According to the current Vice President, this occurred prior to the previous President appointing him to the board of directors of Ghana Telecom.

Dr. Bawumia is alleged to have responded to allegations that he is an inexperienced member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) by stating that he would not disguise the fact that former President Kufuor is his political godfather. This was probably done as a reaction to the allegations.

Dr. Bawumia, when addressing delegates of the party in the Western Region, stated that there was a time when the Financial Times in London arranged a discussion on Ghana's economy during the time that President Kufuor was in office. In his explanation of why the former president became his political godfather, Dr. Bawumia used this event as an example.

He named a few of the dignitaries from Ghana who were present at the forum, including the former President Kufuor, Mr. Osafo-Maafo, Dr. Paul Acquah, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, as well as himself. Other important Ghanaian figures were also in attendance.

He related to the delegates that during the forum, one of the organisers from the United Kingdom began speaking about Ghana's economy to the other participants in the meeting.

"But at a certain point I sensed that some things he was saying about Ghana's economy was not correct so I requested to be given the opportunity to speak, and thankfully my request was granted," he continued. "But at a certain point I sensed that some things he was saying about Ghana's economy was not correct."

He stated that by the time he finished speaking, the mood in the room had shifted because everyone in the room had a better understanding of what the economic policy of the Kufuor government actually was.

"As a result, while we were taking a break, President Kufuor asked for me, and when I arrived, he told me, "Young man, you have done well; keep it up, you will go far."

"Just the same week after we returned to Ghana, President Kufuor appointed me to the board of Ghana Telecom," he disclosed.

He said that in 2008, when there was a vacancy for the job of Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, former President Kufuor appointed him as the Deputy Governor. At the time, he was serving as a Special Assistant to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana at the time, Paul Acquah.

According to Dr. Bawumia, he was an important member of the Government's Technical Negotiations team for HIPC in 2001 and served as the Co-Chair of the Economic Policy Coordinating Committee while President Kufuor was in office. This took place in 2001.

According to the information that he gave, "That was the team that negotiated four billion dollars in relief for Ghana, which helped President Kufuor to stabilise the economy."

He also stated that he played an important role on the team that was responsible for the redenomination of the cedi and the implementation of the inflation targeting framework at the Bank of Ghana.

He reported to the NPP delegates that when the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had been the flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Addo had sent for him. The current President is Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

"When I was getting ready to go meet with him, I believed it was likely that he was interested in learning something about the economy or required some facts pertaining to the economy.

"Therefore, I took the necessary steps to prepare myself, but when we met, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo told me that he wanted me to be his running partner after only a short conversation.

"Nana Addo told me that I should let him handle the politics and accept his offer to be his running mate, which left me speechless because I am not a politician," said the candidate. "After giving it some thought, I returned the next day to inform him that I would be accepting his request," the Vice President disclosed.
