Apostle Eric Nyamekye, chairman of the Church of Pentecost, has issued a challenge to the people of Ghana, urging them to be willing to bear discomfort by placing the interest of the nation ahead of their own personal interests in order to leave a better country for the generations who will come after them.
If its citizens, particularly those in positions of authority, continue to prioritise their own personal interests over those of the nation, then, in his opinion, the country will not enjoy the kind of consistent, progressive growth that is desirable for its future.
"This is not a healthy situation because we have people in positions of leadership who just consider what is best for themselves. Apostle Nyamekye admonished the congregation to "live for the next generation and not just for the next four years." He continued by saying that "you cannot improve the future without addressing the present," thus it is important that we consider Ghana in the future. Whatever you do, it should be for the good of the country.
On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, he delivered these words at the beginning of a National Development Conference that was hosted by The Church of Pentecost at the Pentecost Convention Centre located in Gomoa Fetteh, close to Kasoa. The conference was scheduled to last for two days. The topic of discussion for the conference is "Moral Vision and National Development."
In light of what he learned from Isaiah 59:14-15 and Proverbs 14:34, he came to the conclusion that the nature, character, and confidence of the people are the most important factors in determining the success or failure of a leader. He emphasised the need of upholding moral ideals since no country can reach its full potential with people who live by beliefs that are in conflict with one another.
Apostle Nyamekye cited the case of Moses, Israel's greatest leader, who was unable to enter the Promised Land. Moses was unable to enter the Promised Land because of the nature and pressure of the people, which the Israelites failed to nip in the bud promptly and strategically. Aaron made a golden calf for the people, which resulted in Aaron's inability to enter the promised land.
It is essential for us to develop a code of ethics that may serve as a compass for the way we live in Ghana. Apostle Nyamekye argued for a pattern that was socially approved and acceptable as well as principles of proper behaviour that were shared by all.
Apostle Nyamekye bemoaned the decrease in moral standards in Ghanaian society and emphasised the church's transformative mandate and historical precedents to be included in the discourse of national development. He also underlined the church's historical antecedents to be involved in the conversation of national development.
He advocated a mindset that would help construct a better world based on the lessons that our ancestors had taught us about equality, the dignity of labour, and integrity in one's speech.
At the conclusion of the meeting, which was attended by Ghanaians from all regions of the country, including members of parliament, MMDCEs, political party leaders, assembly members, and others, it is anticipated that a statement will be issued.
During the ceremony, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama presented speeches to the crowd. The main address was delivered by Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S. K. Bagbin, the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude, Justice A. E. Torkonoo, and the President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, all gave speeches and extended pleasantries to one another throughout the ceremony.
The conference will cover a variety of subjects, including "Moral Vision and Development," which will be presented by Professor Delanyo Adadevoh of the International Leadership Foundation; "Leadership and Human Flourishing: Making a Case for Social Justice and Nation Building in Ghana Today," which will be presented by Very Rev. Prof. J. Asamoah-Gyadu, President of Trinity Theological Seminary; and "Raising Effective Politicians for Africa," which will be presented by Dr.
Other topics include "Religion and Morality Development" presented by Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, "Integrity in Nation Building" presented by Apostle A. N. Y. Kumi-Larbi, and "Patriotism and National Development" presented by Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong, Executive Director of Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa.
