In order to defeat Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen in the 2008 presidential primaries, several New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate candidates banded together, according to former energy minister Mr. Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko.
He claimed that the decision to oppose Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen was made after he met with some party elders, which Mr. Agyarko omitted to name.

" The evening before the 2008 primary elections in Legon, we were summoned to an old NPP member' s home and ordered to resign immediately in order to support Akufo- Addo. However, we declined. We informed them that it was too late and that we couldn' t make such a choice without first contacting our supporters, according to Mr. Boakye Agyarko.
He claimed that even after they declined the decision to get out of the contest, they were nevertheless asked to persuade their supporters to support Akufo- Addo.
The current president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, won the New Patriotic Party' s 2008 presidential primary by receiving 47. 9% of the vote against Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen' s 32. 5% in second place.
As one of the select few, Kyerematen has been on the National Executive Committee for more than ten years, serving under the presidencies of B. J. DaRocha, Peter Ala Adjetey, Samuel Odoi- Sykes, and Haruna Esseku. He was chosen to join the NPP/CPP Great Alliance Negotiating Team as a consequence of his involvement in the Party' s strategy development.
Alan John Kyerematen formally resigned from his job as the Minister for Trade and Industry on January 11, 2023, and also declared his desire to run for the NPP' s flagbearership.
