Akufo-Addo 'cares better' about Rawlings than Mills, Mahama - Stephen Atubiga

It seems that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took good care of the late President Jerry John Rawlings before and after his election in December 2016.

According to Stephen Atubiga, a suspended member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President Akufo-Addo treated Jerry John Rawlings better than former President Atta Mills and John Mahama. "Ican tell you officially that Akufo-Addo took care of Rawlings better than John Mahama and Atta Mills did when he was alive. Akufo-Addo ran close to Rawlings and protected him. I know what I'm talking about," he said.

Atubiga's
revelation comes after Akufo-Addo declared thathe had a good relationship with the former president when they started as "enemies". After the death of former PresidentRawlings, Akufo-Addo read a tribute:

"It is not a
secret that the relationship between the two of us, from the main day of 1979, until the short time I spent abroad, he took the job as the 1st President of the 4th Republic, the history of Kume Preko complaints, my tenure as Attorney General and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Kufuor administration, until my nomination as the NPP candidate in 2008, was characterized by extreme hostility.

However, over
time, things havechanged. We have come to see the value in each other and understand, to a great extent, our thoughts. One thing we have in common is our commitment to public service. “My visit to his home in Ridge in 2012 showed a reduction in the tension between us, leading to a friendship that has lasted for the better part of eight (8) years. In fact, when Ghanaians,in 2016, restored, for the first time, their confidence in me in that year's elections, one of the first people I paid a courtesy call on was Mr. President, Jerry John Rawlings. “From the time I took office until the day his Creator called him, he remained a good friend and a place of good advice. I know that, during the difficult times of my presidency, I can rely on his great experience and knowledge. During these times,he helped me.

“There was a symbolic presentation he made to me during the funeral of his late mother, Madame Victoria Agbotui, which was held outside the State House on October 24, 2020. It will be our last time with him. The priestscalled him to receive a special prayer as the only surviving son. He asked the men of God to wait and invited me to join him for a special prayer. He spoke to me in my ear as I stood next to him and said, "I reminded them to pray for you because you lost your mother." This touched me. "It is for good reason that his famous and often talked about idea of ??'probity and accountability', in which he invested most of his political capital, was enshrined in the Constitution of The Republic ofthe Fourth Republic, and, together with "Freedom and Justice", the words of our constitution, are the basicprinciples by which the social order in Ghana must be built."
