The first few weeks of President Bola Tinubu's government have been labelled as 'worst' by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF).
According to the NEF, the administration made a mistake by jumping into making significant choices before it had even attempted to take its initial stumbling steps.
In a statement released yesterday, the organization's Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, noted that attempts by the new administration to fix faults have not been successful, and that the situation has been made worse by the onslaught of plans and policies that would make life even more intolerable for Nigerians.
He stated that "the majority of Nigerians do not require convincing that the country had been reduced to a very sorry state by the previous administration," and that "sacrifices and informed policies and decisions will need to be made in order to make a transition to a more productive economy, more secure communities, and a more united country."
"In our opinion, the government made a grave mistake when it decided to move through with substantial policy changes before it had even taken its initial stumbling steps.
The attempts to repair faults have not been very successful, and these have been made worse by the onslaught of plans and policies that are being hinted at, which would make life even more unpleasant for the average Nigerian.
"Where attempts have been made to fix faults, they appeared to have been done too hastily and will, in the long term, do little to ameliorate the grave obstacles that Nigerians face on a daily basis in order to make a livelihood.
"When all is said and done, the first few weeks of President Tinubu's tenure will be remembered by history as an example of leadership that made already difficult circumstances a great deal more difficult, but failed to explain why.
"The Forum would much rather believe that this is not the intention of the administration, but it shares the agony of the citizen whose life has taken a significant turn for the worse in the last few weeks." Baba-Ahmed gave Tinubu the advice to think about taking some fundamental actions to enhance the environment in which it works to accomplish both short-term and long-term objectives.
According to him, the Tinubu administration's efforts to foster a culture of respect for citizens, humility on the part of the leader, and a readiness to infuse flexibility into policy as wonderful values that should serve both the administration and the country well should be successful.
"The administration must, under no circumstances, consider its vision and plans for our future as a nation to be a done deal. This is an absolute necessity." It is extremely challenging to exert authority over a populace that believes its future has been predetermined and predetermined by an all-knowing leadership.
"We encourage this government to foster the principles of respect for the citizen, humility of the leader, and a readiness to infuse flexibility into policies as wonderful attributes that should serve both the administration and the country well.
"The Forum would like to urge the government that it should think about adopting some fundamental steps to improve the environment in which it is working towards achieving both short-term and long-term goals.
"The most important thing at this stage is to communicate with Nigerians in a manner that enables us comprehend why it has become necessary that we should go through enormous pains, including whether or not these sufferings are inevitable or preventable.
"The citizen has a right to know why it is now hard for millions of families to provide food for their children; why his child may soon have to stop attending school; and why his life does not have a timetable for when it can get better.
"The Nigerian people want to know how we got here, who and what was responsible for the prices we are paying for their actions, and what the administration plans to do to bring the past to book," he added. However, he pleaded with Nigerians to have patience with the incoming administration, believing that the establishment of Tinubu's cabinet will bring about good news for the country.
He came to the following conclusion: "We advise fellow citizens to be patient with the administration and, at all costs, avoid illegal actions that will simply make our lives poorer and more precarious."
