Joseph Nii Armah Quaye, the president of the Fishermen Association, has given his word that he will speak with the Fisheries Ministry about the best way to provide assistance to the families of the two fishermen who were killed in Tema Newtown.

The occurrence strikes him as regrettable and something that might have been avoided.

As a result, he has criticised the way in which a patrol team worked, which ultimately resulted in the deaths of two fisherman in Tema Newtown.

Nii Armah acknowledged during an interview on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem that he had contacted the Ministry while the Tema Mayor was there when a directive was given for a letter to be sent. Nii Armah was speaking about the incident.

"You are responsible for informing the appropriate authorities, and if this has taken place, there is nothing further that can be done." However, if we are going to make arrests at sea, we need to do so in a professional manner; therefore, I will criticise the method in which the patrol crew carried out their mission.

"The naval officers are here to defend us around the clock, and when they make an arrest, they should show some kind of humanity. "If they believed that the individuals had disobeyed the closed-season order, then they could have taken those individuals to the marine police station," he explained.

However, he was not given any information about the letter of approval when it was being drafted.

"They should have pushed me to follow up because they even wanted premix fuel, but that didn't happen. I should have followed up because they wanted premix fuel. Since I'm not involved, there are some things that just can't be done," he explained.

"It is quite regrettable that some people have decided to break the law on their own. They had written a letter to the minister, and they were expected to receive a reply; however, it appears that that did not go through.

The deaths of the two individuals occurred early on Thursday morning while they were out at sea, which sparked an uproar between fishermen and port authorities on the cause of death.

When a patrol boat from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority smashed into their canoe in the Tema Port anchorage, causing it to capsize, they were part of a group of 12 men who were on a ritual Homowo fishing expedition.

One of the deceased fishermen, Francis Acquaye Allotey, was in his late 30s when he passed away. He is believed to have left behind three children, two of whom were students in classes three and one respectively, as well as a newborn baby.
