In order for the New Patriotic Party to come together and win the party's presidential election next year, President Nana Akufo-Addo said he will support any candidate running for the position of party flagbearer.
He claims that he has been given the same option to choose just one candidate as all polling station managers across the nation are allowed to.
When NPP communicators visited him at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, August 2, he informed them of this in a tweet.
President Akufo-Addo declared that he will support a candidate who he thinks can "inflict a third successive defeat on the perennial NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama."
He added that the ruling NPP's history proves that no president can force a candidate on the party, claiming that the party has never been a follower of a cult of personality.
The NPP's past demonstrates that no president can impose a candidate on the party against its will. That kind of party is not what the NPP is. On August 2, when NPP communicators visited him at Jubilee House, he declared, "We have never adhered to a cult of personality.
In fact, John Agyekum Kufuor, the first NPP President, addressed the Congress after I was chosen as the party's presidential candidate by the 2007 National Congress that "the party has its spirit" and that spirit "cannot be ignored."
