Although watermelon is a fruit that is strong in vitamins, minerals, and potassium and can be a wonderful source of hydration for an individual, particularly in hot and humid conditions, some people should not consume this fruit on an empty stomach because it can cause stomach upset in certain people.
On an empty stomach, who should refrain from eating watermelon?
"Depending on a person's physical make-up and how their hormones are working, eating fruit on an empty stomach might or might not be beneficial to them. If a person is known to display symptoms of leptin resistance or has insulin resistance, eating fruit at breakfast may not be the best decision to go for because it might aggravate the symptoms and may not be as advantageous. However, fruit can be ingested at any time as a snack in smaller quantities to benefit more, and this can be done at any time of the day. According to Nutritionist Anupama Menon, this is because, over time, due to excessive leptin secretion in the body (made by the adipose tissue), the sensitivity can drop, creating fructose intolerance, and hence causing a higher level of fat production and storage in the body.
It is possible to have an increase in cortisol when eating watermelon on an empty stomach.
According to Menon, eating watermelon first thing in the morning can be dangerous for someone who is fructose intolerant, and it can also cause cortisol levels in the body to rise, which can contribute to insulin resistance.
Who should avoid eating watermelon before they have anything to eat?
"For optimal nutritional uptake, a person who has a body that is able to digest fruit well should consume fruit first thing in the morning. When the fruit is eaten in its full form, the presence of fibre in the fruit causes the release of glucose to occur more gradually, and as a result, the fruit has a lower glycemic index. According to Menon's findings, selecting the optimal time of day to consume fruit is just as important as selecting the fruit itself.
