A lecturer looks back at history and explains how former President Kufuor was instrumental in Akufo-Addo's decision to make Bawumia his running mate.
Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey, who has studied the history surrounding Dr. Bawumia's meteoric rise, has credited former President Kufuor for the role he played prior to Nana Akufo-Addo picking him as his running partner for the 2008 elections. Kyei-Brobbey's comments were made in response to comments made by Mr. Kyei-Brobbey.
According to Mr. Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey's revelations, when former President John Agyekum Kufuor took power in 2000 and nominated Dr. Paul Acquah as Governor of the Central Bank of Ghana, Acquah also appointed Bawumia as his special assistant. Kufuor did this shortly after appointing Acquah.
Mr. Kyei-Brobbey stated on the Wontumi Morning Show that "the rest is history and one of the most beautiful histories in this country under the Bank of Ghana." He was speaking about how a young Bawumia wowed the former President and his staff at an event in London. The event took place in the United Kingdom.
Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey reported that when Bawumia presented a well-researched speech to former President Kufuor and his staff in London, Kufuor thanked Bawumia and told him that "you will go far."
Immediately following the meeting in London, former President Kufuor nominated Bawumia as a Board member to Ghana Telecom and subsequently made "him a co-chair with the late Dr. Akoto on the Economic Coordinate Committee it is similar to what we have now as Economic Management team." Bawumia is now serving in both of these capacities.
They spearheaded the negotiations with the IMF to secure a HIPC rescue package of four billion dollars for us. In addition to this, Kufuor appointed him to the position of Chairman of the International Financial Market Committee, and nobody can question this appointment.
According to Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey, based on the process, it was previous President Kufuor who created Bawumia at Bank of Ghana so that Akufo-Addo could choose him as his running partner.
"What happened after that is history," he continued.
Ishaq Kyei-Brobbey noted that there was a significant amount of discussion inside the NPP prior to the selection of Bawumia as the running mate, but that he ultimately won.
"Now that he is running in the primaries to become the Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, I am not surprised that the same controversy is resurfacing, but I have no doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bwumia will survive tremendously well."
Beyond that, he is going to run for president of the Republic of Ghana, which is going to cause a lot of uproar and controversy. However, he is going to be victorious over John Dramani Mahama and win, which will be a breakthrough for the New Patriotic Party, as he has strongly stated.
