The world is watching the events in Niger as the military junta continues to hold on to power. The West African nation earlier this week witnessed an upheaval as the military overturned the democratically elected government and replaced it with a military one. The Economic Community of West African States in response have condemned the coup in Niger. They have also sent a strong response that they are willing to send an armed group to Niger to help restore the previous government.
Many have questioned the stand of Ghana in the recent happenings in Niger. Some have asked if President Akufo- Addo is ready to also support other leaders in sending armed men to fight in Niger. The president of Ghana has boldly condemned the coup in Niger. According to him the trend cannot be left to continue as it endangers the whole West African region. Akufo- Addo stated that coups will never be accepted and the one in Niger isn' t an exemption.
" There are unfortunately emerging trends of some military takeovers in the West African region, which are however not accepted by the international community as the norm, and will never be. Ghana will continue to count on her diplomats to offer the needed support to these counties to help them return to democratic governance which is the norm" , President Akufo- Addo said.
The President however failed to speak on whether he supports calls to militarily intervene in Niger. It can be recalled that President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, as head of ECOWAS has called on the Senate to grant him to use military intervention in Niger. Others West African countries like Benin, The Ivory Coast and Senegal have also resolved to intervene in Niger. The military led junta in Niger have up till tomorrow, Sunday, August 6, 2023 to back down and restore the previous elected government or face a military intervention.
