Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, a former leader of the Methodist Church in Ghana and a former chairman of the National Peace Council, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Akufo-Addo, to clarify to the Ghanaian population why they deserve another term in office beyond 2024. Similarly, he emphasized that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) also needs to provide reasons why they should be granted the opportunity to regain power.
In the upcoming 2024 presidential elections, the NPP will have been in power for eight years. This aligns with the pattern seen in Ghana's Fourth Republic, where the ruling party typically loses and hands over power. This tradition has created a political landscape where the NPP and NDC are the dominant contenders for power.
Despite the NPP's intention to "break the 8" and secure a victory in 2024, Prof. Asante believes that the party should offer convincing arguments to the public as to why they should continue to govern. He also addressed the NDC's aspirations to return to power, stating that they should provide clear justifications for their bid based on their previous experience in government.
Prof. Asante's views, expressed during an interview on Joy TV's 'The Pulse' program, may surprise some due to his perceived affiliation with the NPP. While he has not explicitly confirmed or denied this affiliation, his previous critiques of the John Mahama administration and his consistent political comments have led some to associate him with the NPP.
Furthermore, Prof. Asante highlighted the need for honesty in political promises, criticizing the tendency of Ghanaian politicians to make unattainable pledges merely to gain public favor. He emphasized the importance of fostering tolerance and peaceful coexistence among individuals of different religious backgrounds, referencing a positive experience with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who observed the harmonious relations between Christians and Muslims during a visit.
