Witness 27 young incarcerated individuals participating in the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) during a significant event. The BECE took place at the Bethany Methodist Junior High School, a designated examination center situated in Accra, the capital of the nation. This year's examination involved around 300 students, split between genders. Of these, 162 were male candidates, while the remaining 138 were female candidates.
Of the male candidates, an intriguing subset consisted of 27 young inmates from the Senior Correctional Centre of the Prison Service. This specific facility caters to juvenile offenders below the age of 21. GhanaWeb's team was present to document the moment as these 27 inmates disembarked from their bus and proceeded to their designated classrooms for the second paper of the day, which focused on Ghanaian Language and Culture. The examination center was also marked by the presence of prison officers who had been deployed there.
The security measures at the center were notably heightened, a response to the previous year's incidents. During the 2022 BECE at the same center, some juvenile prisoners had attempted to escape, prompting a strong security response. These escape attempts included efforts to scale the center's walls, all of which were successfully thwarted by authorities.
The group of 27 inmates is part of a larger cohort of 57 prisoners who are participating in the 2023 BECE. This broader group includes eight candidates from Kumasi Central Prison, nine from Nsawam Medium Security Prison, and four from Sunyani Central Prison. This year's BECE is a massive undertaking, with over 600,000 candidates from nearly 19,000 schools across the country participating at 2,137 different examination centers. The BECE is scheduled to continue until Friday, August 11, 2023.
The examination kicked off on Monday with two papers: Religious and Moral Education, as well as English Language. As of GhanaWeb's latest visit to the centers on Tuesday, students were in the midst of their second paper for the day, which covered Ghanaian Language and Culture, following the morning's General Science paper.
Wednesday's schedule included Social Studies and Basic Design and Technology, while Thursday would feature Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology. Finally, on Friday, the examination would conclude with the French paper. For those interested, scenes from the BECE center in Accra can be viewed in the provided video.
In a separate initiative, GhanaWeb, the prominent digital news platform of Ghana, in collaboration with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, is launching an assertive campaign. The objective of this campaign is to encourage the passing of comprehensive legislation in parliament that will provide guidance for organ harvesting, organ donation, and organ transplantation within the country.
