Have you heard of the African Indians? Or have you heard of mini – India ? Or have you heard of the Island Paradise ?
If you haven’t, then let’s take a short trip to an island which is 2,000 km off the southeastern coast of East Africa, east of Madagascar.
In the Indian Ocean, there is an island country which spans 2,040 square kilometers and has an exclusive economic zone covering 2,300,000 square kilometers which makes this the 3rd smallest country on the African continent ; the name of this country is Republic of Mauritius.
Republic of Mauritius is an island created by volcanic activity and emerged from the water more than 8 million years ago.
Mauritius is a democratic country whose President happens to be His Excellency Prithvirajsing Roopun, who is the seventh president and has been serving since 2019.
Mauritius has 1 million citizens. Mauritian society includes people from many different ethnic groups aa well as a significant population of mixed – race people who have ancestry from more than on ethnic group. A majority of the republic’s residents are the descendants of people from India.Mauritius also contains substantial population from continental Africa ,China ,France and the East African island nation of Madagascar.
Mauritius has a number of ethnic groups which includes;
• Indo – Mauritians: these people make up approximately 66% of the population. The Indo – Mauritius population consist Hindu ,Muslim and Christian descendants of Indian laborers.
• Mauritian creoles(descendants of Africans) : these people make up 28% of the population. Today , a significant proportion of creoles are of African descent with varying amounts of French and Indian ancestry.
• Franco – Mauritians : these people form around 2% of the population.
• Sino – Mauritius :the people from Hakka and other Chinese sub – ethnic group make up around 4 % of the Mauritian society.
Due to the different races, the Republic of Mauritius has no official language. The main languages spoken in Mauritius are English , French ,Mauritian Creole and Bhopuri .English is the language used in parliament nevertheless French is also accepted. However , the television programmes and the newspapers are usually in French. Mauritius Creole , which is spoken by 90% of the population us considered to be native language of the country .
Apart from the fact that this land is full of African Indians, there is no doubt that this Island has some beautiful sceneries .This Island also serves as one of the best place to go on vacations. The Island has interesting places like;
• Chameral seven colored earth.
• Sir Seewoosagar botanical garden.
• Black river gorges.
• Chameral waterfall and many more.
