The race to who leads the ruling New Patriotic Party is gathering steam. So far 10 candidates have been cleared to contest in the NPP flagbearer race. Interestingly, the party has decided that only 5 candidates can enter into the final stage of the race. Out of the 10 candidates, many tip one of the trio of Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Alan Kyerematen, former Trade and Industry minister and Mahamudu Bawumia, current Vice President, to emerge and lead the NPP into the general elections of 2024.
The other candidates are Francis Addai Nimoh, Joe Ghartey, Kojo Nsafoah, Akoto Afriyie, Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko and Konadu Apraku. The NPP will be going for a Super Delegates Congress this month to narrow down their flagbearer list to 5. The elections will be carried out in all 16 regions. The Daily Guide newspaper has released a poll of their 5 candidates who will sail through the mini congress this month.
The list of 5 however has a surprising name in the top 5 and many are surprised about that individual. According to the polls, Kennedy Agyapong who is number 1 on the ballot paper will garner 27. 53% of votes. Mahamudu Bawumia will get 22. 94%, while Alan Kyerematen will poll 20. 93. Interestingly, Kojo Poku Nsafoah is to receive over 800 votes from delegates, a number that constitutes 18. 94%. Kwabena Agyapong and Francis Addai Nimoh complete the list with 5. 31% and 1. 42% respectively.
Kojo Poku is one individual many don' t expect to get much votes. However, the popular newspaper claims that their poll suggests otherwise. It will be interesting to see if this will materialize on the election day. For Kennedy Agyapong, many have tagged him as the third force who will split votes within the NPP.
Some say that the Assin Central MP will be the kingmaker, the person who will determine who wins the main congress in November. He might qualify from the super delegates congress but winning the ultimate in November will be difficult. The Daily Guide poll feel otherwise and assert that Kennedy is favorite to win in the upcoming congress.
The John Mahama led National Democratic Congress are on standby awaiting the winner of the NPP flagbearer race. This will be the fourth time that John Mahama will be leading the NDC into a major election. In the last 3 elections, Mahama has won only one and lost the last 2 general elections.
