In less than 2 years Ghanaians will be going to the polls to elect a new leader. President Akufo- Addo will be exiting from office next year after being in power for 2 terms. The two largest political parties in the countries have already started gearing up for the contest ahead. The opposition National Democratic Congress have already elected their flagbearer and other parliamentary aspirants. The ruling New Patriotic Party are also on the verge of electing their candidate.
So far 10 candidates have been cleared to contest in the NPP flagbearer race. Interestingly, the party has decided that only 5 candidates can enter into the final stage of the race. Out of the 10 candidates, many tip one of the trio of Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Alan Kyerematen, former Trade and Industry minister and Mahamudu Bawumia, current Vice President, to emerge and lead the NPP into the general elections of 2024.
Paul Adom Otchere has released his top 5 candidates who will qualify from the upcoming Super Delegates Congress this month. According to him, all the candidates have their advantages and flaws, and this will be crucial in determining who goes through to the last stage of the competition. Paul Adom Otchere boldly stated that the trio of Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Mahamudu Bawumia will sail through to the next stage without any difficulty.
The difficulty lies in who will be joining the three to complete the top 5. According to Paul, Akoto Afriyie could possibly join the big 3. He explained that Akoto Afriyie, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture is one of the few people who has a large support base. Akoto Afriyie has been bragging about having the base of farmers who qualify as delegates as his support base. He has bragged that in a real election he has the support of over 2 million Ghanaians who are farmers.
The last candidate Paul adds to his list is Kwabena Agyapong. Paul asserts that Kwabena has a great personality and is the only candidate who has served as an executive of the NPP. He notes that Kwabena is in the ranks of the big men in the party and so will enjoy massive support from some of the top hierarchy of the party. With Agyapong concluding the top 5, Paul asserts that Addai Nimoh, Boakye Agyarko, Konadu Apraku, Kojo Nsafoah Poku and Joe Ghartey will all be eliminated from the race.
