The National Democratic Congress earlier in May conducted their primaries to select parliamentary aspirants for the 2024 elections. A large number of constituencies saw elections with many incumbents retaining their seats. However, some major personalities also lost their positions and this means they will not be on the ticket of the NDC in the 2024 parliamentary elections. It is interesting to know that over 15 constituency elections were also put on hold so as to work out some issues that were preventing the elections in that area.
One of such exceptions is Ayawaso West Wugon. The area is very important and has been a trouble spot since the by election in the area in 2019. Lydia Alhassan of the NPP won but not with some clashes that led to injuries and manhandling to residents. The 2020 elections also proved tense as John Dumelo of the NDC and Lydia Alhassan battled it out. Lydia eventually won but she survived by just a narrow win.
John Dumelo seeks to return in the 2024 elections as the NDC parliamentary candidate. This was countered when Fred Nuamah, a colleague actor challenged him for the ticket. At one point both actors verbally attacked each other. Many assume that the internal primaries were suspended so as to make peace among the two candidates.
Well, Fred Nuamah, in a communique has decided to step down and allow Dumelo contest. According to Fred, this is the best from the NDC. He spoke about how he had had interactions with party leaders and how it was agreed that for the best of the party, John had to lead. Fred asserted that the NDC need to present a unified and formidable front in 2024 and this has shaped his decision to step down. Fred Nuamah called on NDC supporters to come out in their numbers and support Dumelo so that the NDC can win the seat for the NDC.
It can be recalled that in the 2020 parliamentary elections Lydia Alhassan polled 39, 851 while John Dumelo garnered 37, 478. The leadership of the NDC might have felt this wasn' t the time to experiment and as such chose to side with Dumelo.
