Minority Leader denies charges of involvement in the construction of the new Bank of Ghana headquarters

The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) communications director made claims that he was a member of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) board when the first phases of building the new head office got underway, but the minority leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has denied such claims.

Dr. Forson vehemently refuted these accusations, calling them completely baseless, and urged all well-meaning Ghanaians to ignore them.

In a formal declaration issued on Saturday, August 12, the former deputy finance minister insisted that no contracts for the building of a new BoG headquarters were given while the Mahama government was in power.

He publicly pressed Mr. Ahiagbah, the NPP's director of communications, to present any supporting documentation he might have to back up the allegations. According to Forson, "For the records, the Bank of Ghana under the erstwhile Mahama/NDC administration never awarded a contract for the construction of this new Head Office."

We challenge individuals like Ahiagbah and his NPP defenders to present whatever proof they may have to the contrary, he continued. Second, no land in Accra was ever bought by the Bank of Ghana for a new Head Office building.

Dr. Forson was certain that the central bank should cancel the new head office project because it was unneeded. He attacked the Bank of Ghana for moving on with the construction of a modern headquarters despite facing financial difficulties, claiming that such a project was an irresponsible and misguided priority.

Dr. Ato Forson was allegedly involved in the Bank of Ghana board that started conversations about building the new headquarters, according to Mr. Ahiagbah's allegations. Although the discussions started in the 1990s, Ahiagbah claimed that the real implementation procedures did not begin until later. He asserted that Forson, a deputy finance minister who sat on the Bank's board under the Mahama-led administration, took engaged in talks to buy land close to the Achimota forest.

Although the BoG Board finally withdrew from the discussions, Mr. Ahiagbah said that a settlement fee of $1.2 million was paid. Toto Forson was a member of the Bank of Ghana board while they were in power, he highlighted, and the discussion about constructing a new headquarters didn't begin today but rather in the 1990s.

Dr. Ato Forson responded by categorically rejecting these claims as incorrect and advising utter disdain for them.
