OKRA; A POWERHOUSE OF NUTRIENTS

Okra is a flowering plant known for its edible seed pods. It’s cultivated in warm and tropical climates, such as Africa and South of Asia. Sometimes referred to as ‘Lady’s finger’, okra comes in two colours – red and green. Though they are of different colour they taste the same , and the red turns red when cooked.


Biologically, okra is classified as a fruit and is generally utilized like a  vegetable in cooking. Okra has a slimy texture, which people find unappealing. Though it’s not one of the most common foods, okra is packed with nutrients.

Let’s take a look at some benefits of okra;

1.Okra boasts an impressive nutrient profile. 100 grams of Okra contains; 33 calories, 7 grams of carbs, 2 grams of protein, 3 grams of fibre, 14% of Daily value(DV) of Magnesium, 15% of DV of  Folate, 14% of DV of Vitamin A, 26% of DV of Vitamin C, 26% of DV of Vitamin K and 14% of DV of Vitamin B6.

Okra is also a source of Vitamin C and K1. Vitamin C a  water - soluble vitamin that contributes to your overall immune function, while Vitamin K1 is a fat – soluble vitamin that’s known for it’s role in blood clotting.

Okra is rich in many nutrients and particularly high in vitamins. This fruit is unique, since it also provides protein a nutrient that many fruits and vegetables lack.

2.Okra contains beneficial antioxidants. Okra is packed with many antioxidants that benefit your health. Antioxidants are compounds in food that fend off damage from harmful molecules called free radicals. The main antioxidants found in Okra are Polyphenols, which includes flavonoids, as well as vitamin A and C.

Research shows that, eating a diet high in polyphenols may improve heart health by lowering risk of blood clots and oxidative damages. It also benefits the brain health due to its unique ability to enter the brain and protect it against inflammation.

3.Okra may contain anticancer properties. Okra contains a type of protein called Lectin, which may inhibit the  growth of human cancer cells. One test – tube study on breast cancer cells found out that the Lectin in Okra may prevent cancer cells growth up to 63 %.

4.Okra may lower blood sugar level. Maintaining healthy blood sugar level is important for your overall health. Research shows that Okra decreases auger absorption in the digestive tract, leading to a more stable blood sugar response.

Note that Okra may interfere with some diabetic medications, therefore it’s advisable to consult your doctor before eating Okra when taking  drugs.
