Actor John Dumelo has asserted that it would have been a perilous move for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to replace their chosen candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency seat. While Dumelo is not opposed to internal competition within the party's parliamentary race, he deems such a contest unnecessary in this case.
Speaking on Ghana Tonight, a TV3 program, he highlighted that the unique circumstances of his initial strong performance in the 2020 contest, where he narrowly lost, made changing the candidate a risky proposition for the NDC party. He characterized such a move as "suicidal" and stressed that while democracy allows for such decisions, extensive negotiations should be carried out as well.
These remarks from John Dumelo come in the wake of fellow actor and a friend, Fred Nuamah withdrawing his candidacy for the same NDC ticket. The party, through a press statement, officially endorsed John Dumelo as the Parliamentary Candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the forthcoming 2024 elections.
This decision was a result of productive discussions led by the party's leadership. The other two contenders who had initially intended to challenge Dumelo but also chose to step down after engaging with party leaders.
Dumelo highlighted the meticulous decision-making process within the party, which involves comprehensive research to determine whether retaining or replacing a candidate is the right choice.
