Among other options on the table, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sees military intervention in Niger as a last resort in dealing with the political situation in the West African country. The move, according to ECOWAS is to force the military junta to hand over power to the democratically elected president, Mohammed Bazoum
This stance by the regional bloc has been opposed by many security experts who feel diplomacy is the best approach to help remedy the situation in Niger. As attempts by ECOWAS to engage the junta have proven ineffective so far, military intervention is gradually becoming the only option on the table.
Thirteen members of the Interior and Defense Committee of Parliament met yesterday, August 15, to discuss Ghana's position on the stance taken by the regional bloc. At the meeting, the three security ministers, that is, the Minister of Interior, the Minister of Defense, and the National Security Minister insisted that Ghana as a country has had a stellar performance as long as security deployment and peace-keeping are concerned, and hence countries in the sub-region look up to Ghana to make a move.
They argue that Ghana may not be in a good financial position at the moment, but in terms of the strength of the military, we have the men to make the move. The ministers, however, were tight-lipped on the number of troops to deploy. The minority members of the Interior and Defense Committee were however opposed to this suggestion.
According to the minority members of the committee, Ghana has not been able to find solutions to the security challenges that have been confronting the country. The said conflicts such as the one in Bawku have not been fully dealt with yet, so the deployment of troops to Niger will not augur well with the security situation of the country.
