Frank McAvennie believes Manchester City 'must' let Joao Cancelo go as Pep Guardiola will 'never' change his mind about him, so he won't have any minutes.
Cancelo has been a very useful player for City for several seasons. The penultimate season saw the versatile full-back play 36 Premier League games, scoring 1 goal and assisting 7 times.
He was also directly involved in five Champions League goals in nine games. However, last season Guardiola's system changed and Cancelo was not his first choice in a few games. He clearly wants to play at this stage, and Guardiola has offered him that luxury, but on loan at Bayern Munich, not Man City.
McAvennie thinks Guardiola will not bring the full-back back into his squad as he has returned from loan, having missed the opening matches of the Community Shield and Premier League.
McAvennie told Football Insider: "Once Guardiola makes his decision, he will never change it.
"It's difficult because Cancelo is a very good player, but it's understandable if he keeps messing with the dressing room."
It's unclear if Cancelo interrupted anything. He will be eager to play, as he was on loan, but that does not mean he will cause problems. However, McAvennie was right in assuming that Guardiola wouldn't have appreciated him if he were. In 2017, the manager said:
“Bad face, bad behavior… when it happens, forget it. You cannot stay if this happens.
As a result, McAvennie felt that the full-back needed to be sold as he was too good to waste on the Man City bench.
"He's a great player and Guardiola knows that if he's not playing week in, week out in the City squad, he's got to let him go," added McAvennie.
"I think he's a good signing for Barcelona, ??I think he's a really good signing because they haven't really arranged the defence so he would be a perfect fit in La Liga and under Xavi."
Barcelona is indeed an option, after re-activating contact with City. So is Arsenal, though, and if Barcelona can't find the money to pay him, neither can the Gunners.
That being said, City could be forced to sell them, which will certainly help their rivals and could give the North London side a better chance of winning the league this season.
