The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) regret to announce the sudden death of a soldier from the 5 Infantry Battalion. The soldier is known to be Private (Pte) Bayou Roger. It is suspected that the soldier accidentally lost his life as a result of accidental discharge.
However, the Ghana Armed Forces in a press release statement issued and signed by E Aggrey-Quashie ( Brigadier General) who is the Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces. The statement said that Private (Pte) Bayou Roger, was part of a platoon from the Southern Command performing duties at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) near Michel Camp.
Meanwhile, the press release also stated that the incident occured on Saturday 19 August, 2023 at about 0750 hours at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD).
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, a preliminary investigation report indicates that the soldier was seen sitting on his bed and waiting to relieve his colleague at a duty post at 0800 hours when the unfortunate incident happened.
The statement further stated that the soldier's rifle went off hitting him under his chin and killed his on the spot. The body of the deceased soldier has been conveyed to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.
It wasn't stated if the soldier had any spouse or children.
A team from the Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police (GBETSELE Police Station) is collaborating with the Military Police to investigate the fatal accident. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) express their deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends and loved ones of the deceased soldier.
The image of the deceased soldier is disturbing and viewers are adviced to take caution if they cannot watch the photo. It is sad to have a soldier lost his life at a base. This statement is to all the media houses as well.
