Confirmation of readiness by the Accra Regional Police Command to furnish essential security for the Parliamentary Minority's intended demonstration against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his two deputies on September 5, 2023.
The Accra Regional Police Command has affirmed its preparedness to ensure the security required for the Minority in Parliament to conduct their planned protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his deputies on September 5, 2023. The demonstration is slated to occur at the Bank of Ghana's headquarters, where the Minority aims to articulate their grievances over what they perceive as the mishandling of financial resources and the resultant economic consequences.
Originally, the protest organizers had suggested a route for the march that encompassed locations like Parliament House, Osu cemetery traffic light, Ministry of Finance, High Court Complex, Kinbu, Makola, Rawlings Park, Opera Square, and finally, the Bank of Ghana. However, following a confidential meeting between the police and the protest organizers, the police released a statement asserting that the proposed route could potentially jeopardize public order and safety.
Dated August 23, 2023, the statement, signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent of Police Juliana Obeng, conveyed that the organizers were advised to revise the routes and protest destination in the interest of maintaining public order, safety, and the unobstructed provision of essential services. The police had been informed about the impending protest on August 21, 2023, via a notice from the office of the Minority Leader, which outlined their intention to collaborate with others in demanding the resignations of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and Board of Directors of the Bank of Ghana.
The police further elaborated that, subsequent to receiving the notification, they assessed the security implications of the intended routes and final protest location. This assessment prompted the police to call for a change in the proposed routes and destination for the demonstration. While awaiting feedback from the organizers, the police assured that they were ready to furnish the necessary security arrangements for the protest.
Reiterating their commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities, the police assured the public that they would work in tandem with all stakeholders to reinforce the democratic principles of the nation.?
