The Spanish women's football league has called for the dismissal of Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales after he kissed star player Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain's victory in the Women's World Cup final. The league described his behavior as "disgusting" and lodged a complaint with the President of the Superior Sports Council (CSD) while demanding his removal from the position.
Rubiales, 46, received significant criticism for the kiss he planted on Hermoso's lips after Spain's 1-0 win against England in the Women's World Cup final in Sydney. Initially, Rubiales defended his actions before eventually issuing an apology, yet the backlash against his conduct persists.
La Liga F, the Professional Women's Football League, released a statement condemning Rubiales' actions and behavior. They stated that the historic achievement of Spain's women's team had been marred by the inappropriate conduct of the highest representative of Spanish football. The league pointed out the impropriety of a boss kissing his employee on the mouth and highlighted another incident where Rubiales was shown holding his genitals on the presidential balcony during Spain's victory celebration.
The criticism also referenced the presence of Spanish Queen Letizia and her daughter, Infanta Sofia, who were seated nearby during Rubiales' actions. La Liga F emphasized that this incident has had a lasting negative impact on the reputation of the 'Spain brand', Spanish sports, and women's football globally.
The Spanish government expressed concern over the situation, demanding transparency and swift action from the football federation. The RFEF responded by scheduling an emergency meeting and initiating an internal investigation.
Victor Francos, Spain's secretary of sport and president of the country's sports council (CSD), highlighted the need for a transparent and urgent report regarding the incident. The government also signaled that it might intervene if the federation's actions prove inadequate.
Notably, renowned American forward Megan Rapinoe criticized Rubiales' behavior, describing it as an assault on Jenni Hermoso. Rapinoe condemned the incident as emblematic of deep-seated misogyny and sexism, pointing out the inappropriate nature of such actions on a significant platform where celebrations should be focused on the accomplishment itself.
