The NABTAG President is furious about how the failure to pay the debts owed to NABCO trainees will impact the NPP in the 2024 elections.
Dennis Opoku Katakyie, National President of the NABCO Trainees Association of Ghana (NABTAG) and President of the "Spartans for NPP", has urged Nana Akufo Addo's NPP to immediately pay the arrears owed to the NABCO trainees in order to restore order to the party and improve their chances of winning the 2024 elections.
In an interview with newsmen, Mr. Dennis Katakyie said that the NPP's Breaking the 8 agenda is not merely a slogan to be sung; rather, the NPP must work hard and be watchful before it can be achieved. Therefore, the outstanding NABCO arrears concerns need to be carefully considered because if NPP doesn't pay the arrears, it will seriously hurt their prospects of winning the 2024 elections and obstruct their efforts to implement the Eight year agenda.
He emphasized tfhat even though the contract between the government and the NABCO Trainees has expired, the government still owes them about 8 to 10 months in arrears, which he said must be settled as soon as possible because it tarnishes the reputation of the NPP. He also emphasized that the youths in the nation have warmly embraced the NABCO initiative. Since it was a terrific opportunity to hire unemployed graduates, the government's inability to settle the debt for the trainees' eight months will leave the young people feeling quite let down.
Mr. Dennis Opoku Katakyie explained how the NABCO trainees significantly aided President Akufo Addo's victory in the 2020 general elections, indicating that his organization petitioned the president to extend their contract before it expires in 2020 with the support of the Ashanti regional minister. Because the 2020 election was so close, it was necessary to heavily campaign for the NPP and President Akufo Addo so that his victory would reflect on the contract extension petition.
He continued by saying that the petition also asked for permanent employment for some of the beneficiaries because the skills they had developed in their line of work could not be discarded.
However, after the NPP won the 2020 election, the President only extended their contract for a few months and refused to pay them for the 8–10 months of work they had already completed. He claimed that this was unfair treatment on the part of the NPP administration given the significant contribution made by the NABCO trainees to the NPP's victory in the general elections of 2020.
Therefore, Mr. Dennis Opoku Katakyie has pleaded with Nana Akufo Addo and his allies to pay them their eight months' worth of arrears if they are unable to find permanent employment. Their 700 Ghana cedi monthly allowances shouldn't be wasted since failure to pay the NABCO trainees will push the NPP into opposition.
