Information gathered by Ghanaian blogger Edrino Greatness indicates that the Military in Gabon has announce that they have taken over power from Ali Bongo.
However, Military officials in Gabon have emerged on a local television to claim they had taken control in a coup attempt.
Meanwhile, Official results from the country's election on Saturday indicated that President Ali Bongo won a third term in power. However, amid reports of shooting in the nation's capital Libreville on Wednesday, troops announced the cancellation of the election and the dissolution of the country's institutions.
The troops reportedly said, "We are putting an end to the current regime," according to AFP.
According to earlier reports from the nation's electoral body, Ali Bongo received more than 64% of the vote on Saturday. For 56 years, the Bongo's family has been in charge in Gabon.
After the voting, the authorities cut down internet access and instituted a midnight curfew, raising questions about the impartiality of the election.
Twelve soldiers made an appearance on Gabon 24 on Wednesday to announce the annulment of the election and the dissolution of the nation's institutions. According to one of the troops, the move was being conducted as a result of "irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos," according to the BBC.
Following the military coup in Niger in late July, Gabon would become the newest African nation to be overthrown by the military.
A coup attempt was also made in Gabon in 2019 when military personnel claimed to have removed President Ali Bongo, who was at the time getting medical care in Morocco. Later on, the administration stated that it had regained control of the nation.
