Education in Ghana has many strengths but also faces challenges. While Ghana's education system is still considered competitive within Africa and among developing nations, there is room for improvement.

The need for reforming and upgrading Ghana's education system has been recognized by the government and other stakeholders. Education Minister Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah highlighted this issue at a recent event organized by the Africa Business Center for Developing Education (ABCDE) in collaboration with the Ghana Library Authority.

Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, formal Minister of Education.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah, who previously served as Education Minister, said Ghana's education system has produced good results compared to other African countries. However, he acknowledged there are also weaknesses that must be addressed. He believes that involving former education ministers and relevant stakeholders can help shape education reforms in a positive way.

At the event, ABCDE launched the "Ghana Directory of Scholarships and Financial Assistance" which catalogues over 200 scholarship programs available to Ghanaian students. The directory will help students, especially those in high school, to effectively plan and pursue further education with the assistance of their parents. Dr. Spio-Garbrah said the number of scholarships and programs listed is likely to increase over time, necessitating future updates to the directory. ABCDE is also considering expanding the directory to cover international scholarships beyond Ghana's borders.

The CEO of the Ghana Library Authority, Hayford Siaw, welcomed the launch of the new scholarship directory. He noted that over the past few years, the number of people visiting Ghana's public libraries has significantly increased, indicating that the libraries' collections of relevant materials are meeting the needs of users. However, he said curated resources on scholarship opportunities had previously been lacking. The new directory fills this gap by researching and compiling all pertinent information in one place.

Mr. Siaw believes the directory will draw more people to public libraries to access the scholarship resources. This shows that while Ghana's education system has strengths, there is room for improvement through reforms, accessible information resources, and opportunities like scholarships that can help students achieve their educational goals. Initiatives like the new scholarship directory are steps in the right direction, providing students and families with the knowledge they need to maximize Ghana's educational potential. With concerted efforts by stakeholders across sectors, Ghana can continue to enhance its competitive edge within Africa and beyond.
