In the Volta Region's Godenu village, where the police are accused of opening fire on locals, leaving three people dead and numerous others injured, tension is rising.
The event took place on August 30, 2023, on a Wednesday morning when police tried to apprehend a guy they thought was transporting Indian hemp from his farm.
The police allegedly started firing indiscriminately after the man rode his motorcycle into one of the houses in the village, killing three people and injuring several more. All motorbikes allegedly burned by the police on the spot.
Some the residents allegedly burned one of the four police cars which was set ablaze on fire in revenge.
While the deceased's bodies have been taken to the mortuary, the injured are being treated at the hospital.
The incident has been reported to the MP for the area and the police have opened an investigation to the matter.
For fear of being shot if they leave their apartments, the occupants have barricaded themselves inside.
Francis Kakraba, a resident, described the incident. In the morning at 10:am, I heard few gunshots. When I quickly left, I noticed some shouting. After failing to apprehend a farmer who was returning from his field and was thought to be carrying Indian hemp, the police sped up to the neighborhood and opened firing. In the process, some of their vehicles caught fire. Some individuals were hurt, while others have died.
The incident has outraged the residents, who are demanding that the victims receive justice. Additionally, they demand an end to police brutality.
There is heavy security presence currently at Godenu to restore clam at the village because a police patrol Vehicle was attacked and therefore the situation should be brought under control. Some 12 persons have been arrested so far to assist the police in investigation to apprehend the culprits.
