5 FOODS AND DRINKS YOU SHOULD NEVER TAKE WHILE ON DRUGS.

There are certain foods and drinks that you should avoid when taking medications or recreational drugs. They can interact negatively and cause side effects. Here are 5 foods and drinks you should never take while on drugs:

1. Grapefruit juice

Grapefruit juice contains compounds that can inhibit CYP3A4, an enzyme that metabolizes about 50% of all medications. This can make drugs stay in your system longer, causing dangerous interactions.

Some drugs that should not be taken with grapefruit juice include:

•Statins for high cholesterol

•Anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax

•Blood pressure medications

•Antihistamines

•Anti-depressants

The interaction can cause dangerously high levels of these drugs in your system, leading to side effects. So avoid grapefruit juice while taking most prescription medications.

2. Energy drinks

Energy drinks are high in caffeine and sugar. While caffeine itself can interact with some medications, the main issue is that energy drinks contain many other ingredients that have not been tested with drugs.

They can contain stimulants like guarana and taurine that may interact with recreational drugs and medications. Energy drinks can also raise your blood pressure and heart rate, which is dangerous if you're taking drugs that also do the same.

So it's best to avoid energy drinks while taking any medications or drugs. Opt for water, juice or tea instead.

3. Alcohol

Alcohol can interact dangerously with many medications, especially sedatives and opioids. Mixing alcohol with these drugs increases sedation and the risk of overdose.

Alcohol also interacts with drugs that affect the central nervous system like anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications and recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine. The combination can cause dizziness, confusion and other side effects.

So alcohol should always be avoided while taking any type of medication or recreational drug.

4. Fried and fatty foods

Fried and fatty foods can interfere with how your body absorbs and metabolizes drugs. This is because fat requires more bile from your gallbladder to digest properly.

But some medications also require bile to be absorbed. So when you eat high-fat meals while on drugs, there may not be enough bile for both your food and medications. This can reduce how well your body absorbs the drug.

Opt for lean proteins, whole grains and vegetables while taking medications to avoid this interaction.

5. Citrus fruits and juices

Similar to grapefruit, other citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and limes contain compounds that can inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. This includes their juices as well.

While citrus fruits do not interact as strongly as grapefruit juice, they still have the potential to increase drug levels in some people. So it's best to limit citrus fruit intake while taking medications.

In summary, avoid grapefruit juice, alcohol, fatty foods and citrus fruits while on drugs whenever possible. Opt for water, herbal teas and balanced meals made with lean proteins and whole grains instead. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about food and drug interactions.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
