The September 2, 2023 run-off between Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko, the two candidates vying to be the next president, has been canceled by the ruling New Patriotic Party.
This comes after Mr. Agyarko withdrew from the competition.
In a letter to Boakye Agyarko, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, head of the NPP's presidential elections committee, stated, "We take notice of your decision to withdraw from the race and as a result the run-off election scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, will no longer be held."
To break the deadlock between Mr. Agyarko and Mr. Addai-Nimoh and determine who will join the four candidates in the party's presidential primary on November 4, a run-off was organized.
Boakye Agyarko withdrew from the run-off after charging the party with violating party constitution.
"I cannot participate in what will be done on Saturday, September 2, 2023, since I refuse to take part in an act that aims to unfairly end a previously agreed-upon procedure. I cannot, in good conscience, provide such an illegal concession to such a bad choice. So, with due respect, I give you this notice to abstain from such a competition. As always, I wish the party well," he wrote in a letter dated August 31, 2023 and sent to Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.
Background
To limit its field of potential flagbearer candidates from ten to five, the NPP conducted a super delegates conference on August 26.
At the conclusion of voting, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received 629 votes, or 68.15% of the vote, to win the super delegates conference.
Former trade minister Alan Kyerematen finished third with 95 votes (10.29%), followed by Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong in second position with 132 votes (14.30%). With 36 votes (3.90%), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto finished in fourth place.
After receiving nine (9) votes each, Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh will face off in a run-off on Saturday, September 2, according to the New Patriotic Party.
Despite expectations that the people who participated in the special delegates conference on August 26 would participate in the run-off, the party later stated that only members of its National council member can vote in this exercise.
The party claims that the choice was made to save time and money, and that it will be hosted in its headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.
However, Mr. Agyarko disapproved of this choice.
In the letter, Mr. Oquaye stated that the candidates who will run in the election on November 4 are as follows: Mahamudu Bawumia, Ken Ohene Agyapong, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Prof. Oquaye thanked Mr. Agyarko on behalf of the party for his participation in and communication on the topic and underlined that the Committee remained dedicated to openness and justice in all facets of its work.
