Blast at quarry site in Shama claimed 4 lives and others yet to be found.
An explosion at a quarry site in Shama has resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, while numerous individuals are currently unaccounted for.
This incident, which took place during the early hours of Sunday, has also left several others injured. The explosion transpired at the G-Omini Quarry located in the Shama District of Ghana's Western Region.
Among those affected are both Ghanaian and Chinese nationals who were working the night shift at the quarry. The victims were hardworking employees who were engaged in their routine tasks during the night shift when this devastating incident occurred.
Tragically, some individuals have suffered burns to the point of being unrecognizable. The injured have been swiftly transported to various hospitals, but the whereabouts of several individuals remain unknown. This catastrophic explosion transpired at approximately 00:30 GMT.
The explosion resulted from the detonation of explosives that were reportedly stored in an unregulated manner, lacking the necessary permits. These explosives claimed the lives of the workers. Beyond the human toll, the explosion has also inflicted extensive damage upon the quarry.
The Shama District Chief Executive, Ebenezer Dadzie, has confirmed the incident and conveyed that rescue operations are ongoing to locate the missing individuals and evaluate the extent of the damage incurred. As of now, the exact count of injuries and fatalities has not been determined by the District Security Council.
Furthermore, it has come to light that the company responsible for the quarry was storing explosives unlawfully, in violation of regulations set by the Minerals Commission that govern the acquisition, storage, and utilization of explosives. A source with insight into the matter disclosed that the explosion did not transpire during a blasting operation but instead resulted from explosives stored in a non-structured storage facility.
Law enforcement and the Ghana National Fire Service are currently at the scene to manage the situation.
