We Will Use IPT To Protect Pregnant Women Against Malaria- Rebecca Akufo-Addo
Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo is a Ghanaian public figure and the current first lady of Ghana as the wife of President Akufo-Addo.
As First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo has been praised for advocating the fight of the disease Malaria in Ghana and has been recognized as a nutrition champion for fighting against malnutrition in children and adolescents, and outstanding contribution to women's health and efforts against infant mortality in Ghana and across Africa. In 2017, she established the Rebecca Akufo-Addo foundation, a non-governmental organization with a mission to enhance efforts of the government amongst Ghanaian women and children.
Rebecca Akufo-Addo said that “On Tuesday, 19th September, she attended the Roll Back Malaria Partnership event at Madison Square, in New York, under the theme; "Protecting Pregnant Women against Malaria: Speeding up Uptake to IPTp in affected African countries".
Rebecca Akufo-Addo further stated that Globally, 1 in 3 pregnant women suffer from malaria in moderate to high transmission countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
This is responsible for approximately 10,000 maternal deaths and 100,000 newborn deaths yearly.
According to Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Intermittent preventive treatment or IPTp, started as early as possible, can save the lives of both expectant mothers and their unborn children from malaria, together with sleeping under a bed net and effective treatment of malaria.
The first lady, Rebecca Akufo- Addo therefore appealed to international advocates and stakeholders in the prevention of malaria in pregnancy to scale up their efforts aimed at using IPT to protect pregnant women and their unborn babies from the harmful effects of malaria during the period of pregnancy.
Rebecca Akufo- Addo also affirmed the Infanta Malaria Prevention Foundation’s support for Ghana’s Malaria Prevention Programme by continuing to educate, create awareness, conduct medical outreaches, provide insecticide-treated nets, and construct more primary health facilities known as CHPS compounds.”
