The national leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a press conference at the party's headquarters on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, has responded to Alan Kyeremanteng's sudden resignation from the party.

Addressing the press, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kudua, said Alan did not give the party a prior notice before his resignation.

He said the party was surprised upon hearing the news of Alan's resignation on Monday.

Justin Kudua believes that Alan's resignation is irreversible considering the fact he never pre-informed the party about his resignation.

"Alan's decision to hold a press conference without first informing the party leadership suggests that he made a premeditated and irrevocable decision to resign," he said.

Alan, former Trade Minister in the Akufo Addo-led government, held a press conference on Monday announcing his decision to quit the NPP.

"I have honourably resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP)," he said.

Alan announced that he is forming his political movement called, "Movement for Change" and he is vying for the presidency come 2024 as an independent candidate.

Alan's resignation came after he was shortlisted by the NPP's Super Delegates among the top five contestants who were chosen to race for the party's flagbearer.

Alan obtained a third position in the August 2023 Super Delegates Conference, having obtained less than 100 votes out of the over 900 votes recorded.

Kennedy Agyapong, who is considered by some NPP's sympathizers as a "non-presidential material" beat Alan to be placed second although Alan had been contesting for 16 years to be the flagbearer of the NPP.

Alhaji Mamudu Bawumia,  the four-time running mate to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also beat Alan to become first on the list.

After the Super Delegates Conference, Alan announced that he had resigned from the ongoing primaries.

His resignation from the party is a big blow to the governing New Patriotic Party as the move may greatly affect the unity of the party come the 2024 General Elections.

The NPP has been at the helm of affairs in governance since January 7, 2017, and hoping to break the eight-year cycle of change of government which usually alternates between the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
