The Minister for National Security, Kan Dapaah, has sued a political activist and #FixTheCountry's convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, for accusing the National Security and some government officials of attempting to silence him with money.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor made this allegation following his release by the police after having been arrested for staging a demonstration which the police restrained.
Among other demands made in the lawsuit, Kan Dapaah wants the court to declare that Oliver's utterances were false and defamatory.
The Minister is also requesting the “recovery of the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GHC10,000,000.00) as General Damages including Aggravated and/or Exemplary Damages for Defamation for the words uttered by Defendant.”
Kan Dapaah is also asking the court for an apology from the convener of the #FixTheCountry and “a perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from repeating similar or other defamatory words against the Plaintiff.”
Barker-Vormawor alleged that a colossal amount of one million United States dollars was brought to him for him to cease his incessant political activism which is believed to be smirching the image of the government.
According to him, he was again being offered political appointments which he rejected.
Although Oliver has yet to disclose it, he claims he has evidence of the allegations made.
Meanwhile, the National Security in a statement released on September 22, 2023, refuted the claims.
Below is a copy of the lawsuit:
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a lawyer and political activist, is known for his constant criticisms against the Akufo-Addo-led government both on Twitter and Facebook.
He announced on Facebook on Monday, September 25, 2023, that he would file a criminal complaint against the Minister for National Security over alleged bribery.
Below is what he wrote;
"I have resolved upon the advice of lawyers to file a formal criminal complaint against the Minister for National Security.
This will be made to the Special Prosecutor in connection with the corruption advances made."
