A bus driver and a passerby tried their best to save a teenage girl on the sidewalk after a terrifying incident occurred during rush hour at school this morning.
Police responded around 8.30 a.m. today to reports of a stabbing near Whitgift Shopping Centre. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance were also in attendance. Despite his best efforts, the unfortunate teenager was pronounced dead at the scene less than an hour later.
Police identified a teenager involved in the incident and arrested him in the area around 9:45 a.m. Police believe she may have known him. The crime scene remains intact as detectives investigate. A mother of two who only wanted to be called Bridget said, “I was on the bus before, got off, turned around and saw them resuscitating her.
The driver was hugging her, as well as a woman. Help was on hand when I got back.” She said two other female students, believed to be friends of the victim, tried to break through the police barricade but were arrested.
Images posted on social media showed a number of police cars and ambulances near a bus in Croydon on Wednesday morning. Met Police Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, in charge of local policing, said: “Our immediate thoughts are with the family of the young girl who is facing this most tragic news.
Our officers are standing by the girl's family to support them. I am liaising with the local community, who are clearly as concerned as we are about this tragic incident. I will continue to update them throughout the day.
“My officers immediately went to the scene to provide first aid and assist medical staff. Based on the information provided to them, officers also worked closely with colleagues from the Met and British Transport Police to trace a teenager involved in the stabbing. I can confirm that the arrest was made at around 9.45 a.m. in the Croydon area.
"At this early stage, we believe he may have known her. The crime scene will be open for some time and I thank the public for their cooperation." A white tent was erected in a police cordon outside the Whitgift Center on Wellesley Road. London Ambulance Service said three ambulance crews, an incident response officer and an advanced paramedic in a car were sent to the scene.
