A school in southern Spain has been evacuated after a teenager stabbed two classmates and two teachers. The attack occurred early this morning at the Elena García Armada Academy in Jerez de la Frontera, and several other students were said to have been injured.
According to local reports, one of the teachers was "stabbed in the eye" during the attack, and no one is believed to have died. A source from Andalusian health authorities said the remaining three victims suffered minor injuries. A spokesman for the Jerez national police station said the attacker had two knives, according to Canal Sur.
Jerez TV journalist Enrique Gallego said school sources believe the 14-year-old student came to class in the morning and pulled a large knife from his backpack. He then began “stabbing anyone who passed by.”
When a teacher intervened, she was stabbed in the eye, according to the report, adding that another teacher who came to help her was also injured. An anonymous student told EFE that the boy got "angry" and ran to get his backpack from the back of the classroom before pulling out a "knife." He continued:
“He then started bothering everyone, including the teacher, who hit him in the eye. He almost grabbed my friend and hit another guy on the forearm. And remember my Physics and Chemistry teacher." The high school was immediately evacuated after the incident.
Photos taken outside the school show parents and students waiting for news from inside the campus. The teenage suspect was arrested and taken into custody. Meanwhile, two weeks ago, a Norwegian man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing to death a British woman believed to be his partner.
Detectives confirmed the incident and arrest in a brief statement this morning. A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: “We can confirm that at 7.40am today we were alerted to a possible domestic violence incident at a property in Orihuela Costa leading to the victim's death.
"The injuries she suffered could be consistent with a stabbing. The victim is a 76-year-old British woman and the killer, who is under arrest, is an 82-year-old Norwegian." Detectives said there were no reports of any problems between the attacker and the victim.
It is still unclear whether the man and woman live permanently in Spain or are on vacation. Orihuela Costa is located in the south of Alicante. In March, a 69-year-old British man was arrested in the same Orihuela Costa neighborhood for stabbing to death his 64-year-old partner, also from the United Kingdom.
Police said at the time that the suspect was caught trying to escape the couple's home. Authorities could not confirm today whether he was still in prison after being placed in pre-trial detention by the investigating judge.
