Ballon d'Or race between Erling Haaland & Leo Messi
Craig Burley has decided who out of Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.
Speaking to ESPN, the outspoken pundit gave his two cents on one of football’s most heated debates currently.
However, Craig Burley believes the Ballon d’Or race has a clear winner out of Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi.
Craig Burley says Erling Haaland should cruise to Ballon d’Or win ahead of Lionel Messi
Gabby Agbonlahor recently said that as brilliant as the Norwegian striker was, the Argentine’s World Cup triumph tips him over the edge.
In fact, many hold the same opinion after witnessing Messi complete football against a world-class French side in Lusail Stadium.
However, Craig Burley believes it would be a disgrace if Lionel Messi beat Erling Haaland to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
Craig Burley made a case for why the club form when it comes to both Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi should be the deciding factor in the Ballon d’Or race.
“If Erling Haaland doesn’t win the Ballon d’Or, close the shop! Lionel Messi has won the World Cup and it’s a great achievement, but it’s a four-week period. His overall championship form wasn’t the best.”
“PSG have been terrible, Erling Haaland… 50+ goals, a Premier League title, an FA Cup and the Champions League. Erling should win this award; I know a lot of people can’t leave the Messi train. But look at the big picture. This price is driving me nuts. I think there will be a bunch of emotional stories. ‘Messi has won the World Cup’, ‘Messi is this and Messi is that’ and they will give him another one.
“If I was Erling Haaland, I would never go back to a Ballon d’Or ceremony in my life if he didn’t win it this year, just like Robert Lewandowski.”
It’s hard to disagree with Craig Burley as for the 23-year-old to be the protagonist of a treble-winning side and having been the best player in the world throughout the season gives him the edge over Lionel Messi as the deserved Ballon d’Or winner.
