There is currently an intense tension in Bawku again over the attempt to force the Kusasi faction in the Bawku conflict to relocate their business to the the Mamprusi side of the divide. This according to the Kusasis would not help the peace process that took place so far. They agued that if the security have powers then they should arrest the illegal chief (Said Abaare) whom an arrest warrant has been placed on him since last year. The security agencies claimed they can't trace the where about of the criminal meanwhile he is a free man in Nalerigu.
The Kusasis are currently accusing the vice president of Ghana Dr Mamudu Bawumia who is a Mamprusi by tribe for whatever is happening against them in Bawku. The Kusasis since the inception of the conflict have laboured in the hands of the law enforcement agencies, from killing of men, women and soaking of stones for children to eat. This they said is not the end. They added that, the Mamprusis have attacked and burn down their cars at Walewale, kill their people there and no arrest is made.
The vice president of Ghana Dr Alhaji Mamudu Bawumia is a Mamprusi by tribe and since his tenure of office, the Mamprusis have fought many tribes in the North and are always accused of getting security favor. The famous ones are the Bawku conflict and the conflict against Gonjas in Lukula. In the Lukula incident, the Gonjas accused the vice president of influencing the police against their men, an incident they vow never to forgive. In the Mamprusi conflict against the Gonjas, the former president of Ghana John Dramani Mahama who is a Gonja by tribe issued a statement immediately and called for calm.
However, the vice president Dr Mamudu Bawumia who is a Mamprusi have not issued a statement since that conflict as well as the conflict in Bawku. This has raised eye brows among discerning Ghanaians.
On Friday 6th October, 2023 a meeting was convened between the two factions by the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu to look into ur the matter of forcing Kusasis into the Mamprusi market. The Kusasis agreed to join on one condition. They asked the Mamprusi mediation team to help them go together to the Bawku Naba palace for them to inform the Bawku Naba of the latest happening. The Mamprusis on the other hand declined that proposal and that aborted that attempt of market relocation which was slated for Monday 9th October, 2023.
There is a heavy media presence in Bawku currently to observe the latest happenings.
