Richard Ahiagbah is the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party in Ghana.
A press release statement issued by the officer on 7th October, 2023. This release came after some sympathizers of the NPP invaded the studios of United Television (UTV) to confront Ghanaian musician and politician Kwame A-Plus on his reasons for criticising the NPP government so much.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has apologised unreservedly to UTV, the team on ‘United Showbiz’ and the public, in general, for the attack visited on the station Saturday night.
Some irate men stormed the studios of the station during its flagship entertainment show ‘United Showbiz’ to accost some of the guests, particular critic and singer A-Plus.
Sixteen of them have since been arrested by police.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued an apology to the management of Despite Media and the United Showbiz program for the interruption that occurred during Saturdays episode of the entertainment program.
However, it has come to the attention of the leadership of the New Patriotic Party, an unfortunate incident that occurred last night at UTV involving some sympathizers of the NPP who went to the studio to raise a protest against the United Showbiz programme.
Meanwhile, we wish to state that the party did not sanction the said act, and we unreservedly apologise to UTV, the programme team and the general public.
According to the New Patriotic Party, the right of citizens to free speech is one of the cardinal values of our tradition, and we are committed to its advancement. The proper way to express concerns over any programme by any media house would be to make a formal complaint. Advancing to interrupt the work of any media house is unacceptable, and we condemn it.
The Ghana Police Service is investigating the matter, and the party intends to cooperate fully with the investigators to deal with the case expeditiously.
