Following his departure from Real Madrid at the end of the 2022–23 season, Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from the game of football.
The former Belgian international announced his decision on his social media profile, with the following statement: “You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer.
“I was able to realize my dream. I have played and had fun on many pitches around the world. During my career, I was lucky to meet great managers, coaches, and teammates. Thank you to everyone for these great times. I will miss you all.
“I would also like to thank the clubs I played for, LOSC, Chelsea, and Real Madrid, and thank you, URBSFA, for my Belgian selection. A special thank you to my family, friends, advisors, and those who have been by my side in good times and bad times.
“Finally, a huge thank you to you, my fans, who have followed me all these years and for your encouragement wherever I play. Now is the time to have fun with loved ones and have new experiences. See you soon, my friends, on the field.
Hazard made his name at LOSC Lille but established himself as a true superstar during his time at Chelsea, where he won a number of titles and trophies. A big-money move followed to Real Madrid in 2019, but things never worked out for him at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Indeed, the former Belgian international’s spell in the Spanish capital was marred by injuries one after the other, and things never fell into place for him. After his struggles over the past four years, Real Madrid and Hazard opted to part ways during the summer, even though his contract had another year left on it.
Following his departure, Hazard did not join any other club even though there were some interested parties in the MLS and in his homeland, Belgium. Ultimately, though, he has decided to bring an end to a storied career. We wish him the best for his future projects!
