A level 200 law student at the University of Ghana, Legon by name Nana Obeng Owusu Junior has met his untimely death at Ewim Polyclinic in the Cape Coast Metropolis as a result of medical negligence by a male health worker whose name we got as Michael who attended to the deceased.

The mother of the deceased Mrs. Nelly Mills who narrated the unfortunate incident to the media that, she sent her son to the aforementioned health facility for first aid because her son felt he needed a nebulizer because he was asthmatic patient. According to her, they got to the hospital around 8:00pm and met Michael at the emergency. Mrs. Nelly Mills told the media that, Michael gave them a very cold reception by shouting at them why they were there.  The deceased mother said she wasn’t pleased with Michael’s reception which nearly resulted into a bit altercation between them. Michael later wrote a medicine on a sheet for her to go and buy at the pharmacy. She left the deceased Nana Obeng and his brother there cracking jokes whiles she left to buy the medicine at the pharmacy.

Mrs. Nelly Mills said she only return in a few minutes about less than five minutes only to meet her son’s motionless body. When she interrogated Michael, he confirmed to her that he gave the deceased an injection. According to her, she questioned Michael that came to the hospital for nebulizer which you prescribed for me to go and buy at the pharmacy and not injection.

The hospital quickly called in an ambulance to transport the body to the University of Cape Coast morgue without the family’s consent. I demanded the release of the body which the hospital refused. The family got to the University of Cape Coast Hospital morgue only to find that my son was embalmed indicating it will be difficult for even an autopsy to establish the cause of death.

The most worrying and painful aspect of all this is that the nurse who is at the center of this death is still moving around without any police invitation after the family had reported the case at Kotokuraba District Police Station on the 10th October, 2023, a day after the incident. The sad incident happened on Monday, 9th October, 2023 at about 8:00pm.

We need Justice for Nana Obeng Junior immediately the mother cries.
