Frank Lucas, the African-American drug kingpin who controlled Harlem during the 1970s, maintained such a low profile that law enforcement remained unaware of his identity in 1971. This changed when he made a bold move by wearing a $100,000 full-length chinchilla coat with a matching hat to the “Fight of the Century” featuring boxers Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at Madison Square Garden.
Chinchilla is by far one of the most luxurious natural materials in the world. It takes around 300 people to make one coat. Chinchilla coats are the finest, most supple, and most delicate in the fur industry. Favored by royalty, actors, singers, and celebrities as a symbol of status, finesse, wealth, and elegance.
Lucas was a flamboyant and charismatic figure who was known for his lavish lifestyle. He was often seen wearing expensive fur coats and jewelry, and he drove a Rolls-Royce. Lucas was also known for his generosity, and he was said to have given away large sums of money to the poor in Harlem.
Lucas's drug empire was eventually brought down by law enforcement in the mid-1970s. He was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 70 years in prison. However, Lucas was released after serving only five years after he agreed to cooperate with the government and testify against other drug traffickers.
Lucas's life story was the inspiration for the 2007 film American Gangster, in which he was portrayed by Denzel Washington. Lucas died in 2019 at the age of 88.
Later, he said this was a “massive mistake.” after getting in the books of the police who were present at the fight and saw his one-in-a-million expensive coat and matching hat. Lucas’s coat caught the eye of law enforcement — who were surprised that he had better seats than Diana Ross and Frank Sinatra.
As Lucas put it: “I left that fight a marked man.” The police later investigated him and ended up arresting him.
