Dame Daphne Sheldrick and her husband, David, established the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust during the 1950s with the primary mission of rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants. Many of these young elephants had tragically lost their parents to ivory poaching.

Dame Daphne Sheldrick employed an innovative approach, which centered around creating a nurturing environment for the orphans. This setting allowed the elephants to form bonds with their human caretakers and other elephants at the sanctuary. These connections equipped them with the necessary skills to eventually reintegrate successfully into the wild.

Furthermore, Daphne Sheldrick devised a specialized milk formula to ensure that the orphaned elephants received the essential nutrients required for their growth and development.

To provide the elephants with a sense of security and warmth, she introduced the use of blankets, simulating the comforting touch of a mother's trunk. These measures played a pivotal role in the effective hand-rearing of these elephants.

Dame Daphne Sheldrick's legacy continues to thrive through the ongoing work of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which diligently carries on her mission.

Today, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust travels throughout Kenya to rescue orphaned African bush elephants and a south-central black rhinoceros crash, along with other animals like giraffes, hippos, and a southern white rhinoceros crash. Many of the orphaned animals rescued are victims of poaching and human-wildlife conflict.

In the early 20th century, Rosalie Edge was an American conservationist who, much like Dame Daphne Sheldrick, focused on wildlife protection but in the context of birds of prey.

Edge founded the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania in 1934, the world's first refuge for birds of prey. Before this, many species of raptors were considered vermin and were shot indiscriminately. Edge's work involved rehabilitating the public image of these birds as well as providing a haven for them.

Using her funds to purchase the land, she created a sanctuary where scientists and birdwatchers could study raptors in their natural habitat. This sanctuary led to a significant decrease in the killing of these magnificent birds and contributed to greater awareness of the importance of apex predators in ecosystems.

While her name might not be as globally recognized as others in wildlife conservation, Rosalie Edge's work had a lasting impact on raptor preservation and influenced subsequent generations of avian conservationists.
