Reorganize the academic schedule to accommodate students impacted by the Akosombo Dam spill - GNAT

The Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service are being urged by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to modify the academic calendar to accommodate students impacted by the Akosombo Dam disaster.

More than 300 teachers and many kids have been displaced as a result of the recent spill in the Volta and Oti regions, according to GNAT, raising concerns about the affected pupils' future educational opportunities.

When visiting the Mepe village in the Volta Region, Reverend Isaac Owusu, the National President of GNAT, emphasized how critical it is to start having conversations right away in order to create a complete strategy that will support educators and students.

Fortunately for us, word has reached us that the Director General and the Minister of Education are in town. Thus, this time we won't be reporting to them. They have seen it, so I think they will ask GNAT and other important players to a meeting when they get to Accra to talk about how to best reorganize the academic calendar to benefit the residents of this area. This is due to the fact that including them in regular school activities would produce an emergency in education.

We will therefore be shocked if the Director General of the Ghana Education Service and the Minister of Education do nothing and keep things as they are once they arrive in the country. Therefore, we have faith and confidence that they will release a roadmap to make sure we don't abandon the victims," he said.

Since October 9, 2023, a sizable portion of the land and the communities downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong dams have been under water. This comes after two dams that produce a third of Ghana's electricity had their second-stage leak.

On September 15, 2023, the Volta River Authority (VRA) started regulating the water flow in the eastern Akosombo and Kpong dams when it was evident that the two reservoirs had an excessive amount of water due to heavy rainfall.

Nearly every community in the Volta region was impacted by the spill, which resulted in significant power disruptions in those areas.

Thursday, October 12, 2023, finds the dam's water level at 276.92 feet, or 84.405 metres. The water level was 83.058 metres, or 272.50 ft, prior to the leak.

The VRA is overflowing the dam because the water in the reservoir has reached the safe operating level for this time of year and the water must be drained from the reservoir to make room for the water flow. If not, water may overflow from the pond and affect its integrity. Question 2. Why does VRA need to splash water from electricity generation?

All existing rooms are now used to generate electricity, but the water entering the reservoir is still higher than before, so electricity generation alone cannot eliminate all the water. If the spill is not contained immediately, water could overflow the dam and cause uncontrollable damage to downstream communities.
